PAYSA Communication and Action Plan Should a player get COVID-19

If an athlete has any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 (i.e., fever, cough, shortness of breath) they should be sent home and instructed to contact their healthcare provider as soon as possible.  Individuals who have had close contact with a person who has symptoms should be separated and sent home as well. 

First – PAYSA Coaches, players, officials and families must notify youth sports PAYSA administrators if they or someone in their household become sick with COVID-19 symptoms, test positive for COVID-19, or have been exposed to someone suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19.

Second – Areas used by a sick person within the last 24 hours will be closed off and not used until after they have been cleaned and disinfected. For outdoor areas, this includes surfaces or shared objects in the area, if applicable.

Third -In the Event of a Positive Test of Player, Coach or Referee, the PAYSA Board Will:

  1. Confirm with Individual/Parent/Guardian the positive test.
  2. Inform Individual/Parent/Guardian that they must remain out of soccer until RETURN TO PLAY – POSITIVEProtocols (see below) are met 10 days from when symptoms started, in compliance with CDCrecommendations.
  3. Recommend participation in contact tracing through Maine CDC Sara Alert:a. https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/infectious-disease/epi/airborne/coronavirus/contact- tracing.shtml
  4. Begin PAYSA Communication Action Plan.

In the Event of a Close Contact (within 6 feet of someone for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period) with Someone with COVID-19:

  1. Quarantine (see below) unless you have been fully vaccinated. People who are fully vaccinated do NOT needto quarantine after contact with someone who had COVID-19 unless they have symptoms. If symptoms arepresent, quarantine and follow the RETURN TO PLAY – QUARANTINE guidelines (see below).
  2. Fully vaccinated people should get tested 3-5 days after their exposure, even if they don’t have symptoms.

RETURN TO PLAY – POSITIVE by Player, Coach or Referee who Tests Positive:

If a Player, Coach or Referee has COVID-19 or has symptoms, they need to stay home and away from all PAYSA programming and others until ALL 3 of the following have happened:

  1. They have NOT had a fever without taking fever reducing medicine (like Tylenol or Advil) for 72 hours
  2. Their coughing, sneezing, and/or breathing difficulty has improved
  3. At least 10 days have passed from when symptoms started

RETURN TO PLAY – QUARANTINE by Player, Coach of Referee in Quarantine:

  1. Individual/Parent/Guardian must self-quarantine for 10 days from the time of their last exposure.
  2. Obtain a COVID-19 test between days 5 and 7 to identify new infections as soon as possible, though anegative test will not change the duration of the 10-day quarantine period.
  3. All individuals in quarantine should continue to monitor themselves for symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 for14 days.
  4. You may be able to shorten your quarantine:
    1. After day 10 without testing
    2. After day 7 after receiving a negative test result (test must occur on day 5 or later)
